New AVO Formulation in OpendTect’s BLI plugin

We are excited to announce a major upgrade in BLI!
Dr. Leandro Passos de Figueiredo and Professor Dr. Dario Grana recently published two works introducing a new AVO approximation in terms of P-impedance and Vp/Vs ratio. One is a conference paper for the EAGE Annual Meeting, and the other is a full article in Geophysics.
This new formulation enhances facies classification when applied to seismic Bayesian inversion. It was derived in response to challenges encountered during facies classification with BLI tests on real data.
Key advantages of the new formulation in inversion workflows:
✅ Greater Accuracy – The new formulation outperforms the previous ones by Foster et al. and Verm & Hilterman.
✅ Direct Inversion to Key Properties – Enables direct inversion to P-impedance and Vp/Vs, a common domain for facies classification, potentially improving prediction accuracy.
✅ Simplified Tuning and QC – Requires fewer parameters (e.g., correlations, standard deviations), making the tuning and quality control process more efficient.
✅ Improved Facies Classification QC – Tuning bivariate PDFs (in P-impedance and Vp/Vs space) is far more intuitive than managing three-variate PDFs in indirect property spaces.
✅ Computational Efficiency – Fewer properties mean smaller matrices, leading to faster computations.
✅ New GUI in OpendTect – The formulation is now available in OpendTect with a brand new QC interface for enhanced usability.
